PM: Latvia will have enough gas for households

Latvia is able to provide gas to households for the heating season, said Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš in an interview on the Latvian Television morning broadcast Rīta panorāma on August 17.

Karins said that, despite the contradicting messages of gas trader Latvijas Gāze, the Inčukalns storage contains more than enough gas for Latvian households for the whole heating season. The Prime Minister also stressed that Latvijas Gāze should not and will not be able to trade this gas anywhere else. On the other hand, if Latvijas Gāze has any internal difficulties, Latvenergo will take over the work.

“Through Conexus, we know the full picture that is actually in storage. Let us not listen so much to what is said by one Gazprom-controlled company in Latvia,” Kariņš said.

He also added that Latvia has strategic reserves for gas, which are intended specifically if Russia desynchronized the Baltic States.

“This is a big game of geopolitics in which we are involved. Our job is to keep calm, to understand that we are paying because Russia attacks Ukraine. If we do, I am sure that we will stand, Russia will not be able to blackmail Latvia and the rest of Europe this winter,” said the PM.
