Rail and port cargo shipments dropped in first half of 2020 in Latvia

Ministry of Transport said July 13 that, in the first half of 2020, cargo shipments in Latvian ports dropped by 30.1%, whereas rail cargo by 47.2%, compared to the first half of 2019.

During the first half of this year, 22,628 million tons of cargo were transshipped at Latvian ports. The largest number of bulk cargo transshipped in six months was 10.51 million tonnes, which is 43.2% less than a year earlier.

The amount of coal transshipped was 2,129 million tonnes, which is 4.6 times less, cereals and cereal products were transshipped at 2,186 million tonnes, which is 6.4% less, wood chips at 1,162 million tonnes, an increase of 17.4%, while chemical bulk cargoes – 1.038 million tonnes, which is by 10.4% less.

Liquid cargoes at Latvian ports during the first half of 2020 were transshipped at 6,244 million tonnes, which is 13.5% less than a year earlier.

Oil products accounted for most of the liquid cargo transshipped: 5.909 million tonnes, a decrease of 12.7%.

Riga port was still in the leading position in terms of the volume of cargo handled, with 11,843 million tonnes transshipped, which is 26.7% less than in the same period last year. followed by Ventspils port, while in the third place was the port of Liepāja.

In the first six months of this year, the volume of rail freight transport in Latvia decreased by 47.2% compared to the corresponding period of 2019 and was 11,563 million tonnes, according to data compiled by the Ministry of Transport.

International transport amounted to 10,925 million tonnes, a drop of 48.7% compared to 2019, while domestic transport increased by 5.7% to 638 000 tonnes.

The information gathered shows that, from international rail freight transport, transit cargo amounted to 9,042 million tonnes, a decrease of 53.9% compared to the first six months of 2019, import cargo amounted to 1,701 million tonnes, which is 9.1% more, and export cargo of 182 000 tonnes, an increase of 32.2%.
