Retail figures in November down on month, up on year in Latvia

Calendar-adjusted data (at constant prices) published by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) on January 27 show that, compared to 2021, in 2022 total retail trade turnover increased by 4.2 %. 

Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 0.4%. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sales of automotive fuel) rose by 8.6 %, but the turnover of retail sales of automotive fuel – by 0.9 %.

Calendar adjusted data (at constant prices) compiled by the CSB show that, compared to December 2021, in December 2022 total retail trade turnover reduced by 0.3 %. Turnover of retail trade in food products declined by 5.8 %. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sales of automotive fuel) increased by 0.4 %, but the turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – by 10.9 %.

Compared to December 2021, the most notable turnover rise was recorded in retail sales of cultural and recreation goods (of 13.4 %), retail sales of information and communication equipment in specialized stores (10.8 %) and retail sales of cosmetics and toiletries (10.3 %). The turnover drop was registered in retail sale via mail order houses or via the Internet (of 10.5 %) and retail sale of electrical household appliances in specialized stores (4.2 %).

Total retail trade turnover at current prices increased by 16.2 % (not taking into account the calendar influence).

Compared to November, the total turnover of retail trade enterprises in December 2022 fell by 3.0 %, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices. Turnover of retail trade in food products declined by 2.0 %. Retail trade in non-food products (except for the retail sale of automotive fuel) reduced by 5.8 %, but the turnover of retail sales of automotive fuel – increased by 2.5 %.

Turnover has fallen in almost all sub-sectors of retail trade. The largest turnover drop was registered in the retail sale of electrical household appliances in specialized stores (of 10.4 %), in retail sale via mail order houses or via the Internet (7.2 %) and retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (5.3 %).

Compared to November, in December 2022 the total retail trade turnover at current prices (not taking into account seasonality) increased by 8.8 %.
