Senior tax official suspended

Talis Kravalis, the Director of the Customs Board and deputy director of the Latvian State Revenue Service (VID), has been suspended from his position, Latvian public television's evening news program Panorama reported on Thursday.

Panorama said that Kravalis has been suspended because of a disciplinary case launched against him.

VID director Inara Petersone told Panorama that the disciplinary case has been started in relation to several episodes -- to probe whether transit procedures have been introduced in line with the EU regulations, and in relation to the image of VID as Kravalis has not been "polishing this image with his remarks in mass media."

Petersone was unable to say how long the disciplinary case will take.

It is far from the first time senior officials within the important tax collecting agency have been in hot water.

Petersone's predecessor, Nellija Jezdakova, was arrested by KNAB anti-corruption officers in 2013. KNAB wanted her prosecuted on charges of accepting bribes and large-scale corruption but the case collapsed earlier this year over differences between KNAB and the Prosecutor General's office.
