Some revival in tourism January in Latvia

According to data published by the Central Statistical Bureau March 15, in January 2022 the number of foreign and resident visitors comprised 79.3 thousand, which is more than double the number in January 2021, but still far below the level before the beginning of pandemic in January 2020.

Compared to January last year, the number of nights spent by visitors comprised 146.6 thousand nights, which is 84.9 % more tan the previous year.

In January 2022 tourist accommodation establishments hosted 49.9 thousand Latvian residents, which is 63.3 % more than in January 2021. The number of nights spent by them comprised 86.8 thousand, and it rose by 45.3 %, compared to January last year.

Latvian visitors stayed mostly in Riga (31.4 %), Jūrmala (17 %), Liepāja (6.6 %), Cēsis municipality (5.2 %), Sigulda municipality (4.2 %) and Daugavpils municipality (4.2 %).

In January 2022 the number of foreign visitors out of all visitors in accommodation establishments comprised 37.1 % or 29.4 thousand, which is 4 times more than in January 2021, however this is still 3.8 times less than in January 2020 before the pandemic. The number of nights spent by foreign visitors, compared to January last year, has grown 3.1 time and comprised 59.8 thousand.

The majority of foreign visitors came from Lithuania (4.5 thousand), Estonia (3.6 thousand), Germany (3 thousand), United Kingdom (2.2 thousand), Ukraine (1.9 thousand), Russia (1.6 thousand) and Poland (1.5 thousand).

Most foreign visitors were hosted in Riga – 81.9 %, Jūrmala – 4.4 %, Liepāja – 2.8 % and Sigulda municipality – 2.6 %.
