Unemployment now below 8%

The unemployment rate in Latvia fell by 0.5 percentage points from the previous month to 7.8 percent in April, according to latest State Employment Agency data - the lowest unemployment level in Latvia since 2009.

At the beginning of April, 76,431 unemployed persons had registered with the Employment Agency, while at the end of the month there were 71,705 unemployed persons.

Among cities, the lowest unemployment level in April was registered in Riga - 4.6 percent. Unemployment in Valmiera was at 4.6 percent in April, in Jelgava - 5.4 percent, Ventspils - 6.2 percent, Jurmala - 6.5 percent, Jekabpils - 9.6 percent, Liepaja - 10.4 percent, Daugavpils - 11.2 percent, and Rezekne - 14.7 percent.

The Employment Agency helped 4,726 persons find a permanent job in April. At the end of April, there were 7,555 vacancies in the Employment Agency's database.

At the end of April 2016, the unemployment rate for Latvia was 8.8 percent.

The figures produced by the Employment Agency, and the Central Statistics Bureau and the European Commission are always slightly different as they are based upon slightly differing criteria. Nevertheless the trend is clearly downwards.
