Rīga plans new cycling paths around the capital

Riga City Council has signed an agreement with the Central Finance and Contract Agency regarding the implementation of a project that provides for the design and construction of cycling paths from Rīga to Piņķi, Ulbroka, and Ķekava, the Rīga City Council said on September 1.

It is planned to build the cycling infrastructure at a length of 16.6 kilometers (km) on three main cycling routes:

  • Rīga - Ulbroka 5.4 km;
  • Rīga – Ķekava 4.1 km;
  • Rīga – Babīte – Piņķi 7.1 km.

The municipality explained that the development of road infrastructure is an important instrument for reducing the share of motorized mobility by promoting the availability of “green” mobility, as an environmentally friendly mobility alternative.

Currently, the Rīga urban area lacks a single cycling network, and the infrastructure has been developed in fragments. It is therefore necessary to create a single and continuous high-speed cycling infrastructure which would also reduce the number of accidents, said the city council.

The project is scheduled to be implemented by May 2026.

The total budget for the project is EUR 25.63 million. The majority is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund – EUR 21.18 million, while the municipal funding, which will be covered by a loan to the Treasury, is EUR 4.45 million.
