Jūrmala entry fee could apply year round

The municipality of Jūrmala wants to increase its entry fee and apply it all year round, LETA found out at the local government on June 4.

Currently, the Jūrmala beachside resort town has a vehicle entry fee of EUR 2 which applies from April 1 to October 1.  Residents declared in Jūrmala and those who own real estate in Jūrmala have access free of charge.

Entry fees have been in force in the city of Jūrmala since 1996. As of autumn 2013, the fee was abolished during the autumn and winter period. The amount of the fee has not changed since 2014 but the costs of maintaining tourism infrastructure have increased significantly in recent years, according to the municipality.

The funds collected from payment of the fee are used for the creation of an environment favorable to tourism and the development of the resort, environmental protection, the protection of cultural monuments, as well as for the provision of public order and security. The municipality reports that the proceeds of the entry fee amounted to EUR 2.9 million in 2022.

The draft binding rules are released for public opinion on the local government website jurmala.lv.
