A new map of dangerous sections and intersections on the country's main highways has been created which summarizes road traffic accident data for the three-year period from 2020 to 2022. Compared to previous years, the number of blackspots has decreased by 10 and in 2020-2020 38 blackspots have been designated.
Ten blackspots coincide with those from 2017-2019. The number of blackspots where there have been road traffic accidents with fatalities has decreased from 14 to 7. From 2017 to 2019, there were 48 blackspots on the national road network, while from 2014 to 2016 there were 99 such spots.
As might be expected given the population and traffic intensity, the largest concentration of blackspots is in and around Rīga. Collisions remained the number one cause of road traffic accidents, with LVC reminding drivers that road markings are there for a reason and should be respected.
