Over 200 traffic accidents in Friday's blizzard in Latvia

By 20:00 on Friday, January 5, 191 road accidents without injuries and 11 accidents with injured people were registered in Latvia, the State Police reported. On Friday, ice and snowy roads made driving difficult in many parts of Latvia.

Driving conditions were particularly challenging around Rēzekne and much of Vidzeme on Friday. During the day the state of roads in the country improved, according to information from the Latvian State Roads.

The number of accidents recorded by 20:00 on Friday is higher than usual. As early as 17:30, police had recorded more road accidents than the daily average.

In the vicinity of Cēsis, Limbaži, Valmiera, Smiltene, and other Vidzeme towns driving conditions were particularly difficult.

Drivers and addressed by Latvian Radio said:

“Hard to drive. Very difficult. Snowy and slippery too. The stops have not been cleaned. Nothing has been done. This weather… for the first time I see a winter like this.”

“It's alright. It also depends what tires you use. If you buy the cheapest set for 50 [euros] then you have to count on it that it will be [hard to drive].”

“I was out to Riga. Round trip [to Cēss]. Normal. A bit of snow. Slippery roads in winter are normal. Now I'm going to Valmiera. [There are] asphalt roads. No issues, I think.”
