Latvia's passenger transport up, freight down in 2023

Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) data of March 6 show that in 2023, compared to 2022, passenger traffic by all modes of transport has increased.

In 2023, the number of passengers carried by road transport comprised 187.4 million passengers, which is 15.4 % more than in 2022. However, it is 21.6 % less than in 2019 before the pandemic when 239.3 million passengers were carried by land passenger transport.

The number of passengers carried by rail transport comprised 17.1 million, a rise of 9.2 %. The number of passengers carried by national transport rose by 9.2 %, but the number of passengers carried by international transport – by 12.3 %.

103.7 million passengers were carried by regular bus traffic lines, which is 12.8 % more than a year ago. Number of passengers carried in national lines increased by 12.8 %, but the number of passengers carried in international lines by 3.5 %.

The number of passengers carried by trolleybuses comprised 38.9 million passengers, a rise of 29.1 %, but by trams – 27.7 million passengers, a growth of 12.3 %.

In 2023, 377.4 thousand passengers arrived at and departed from Ventspils and Liepāja ports with ferries. Their number increased by 1.7 %, compared to the previous year, but, compared to 2019 – reduced by 64.8 %. At Ventspils port passenger turnover comprised 287 thousand passengers, 1 % less, but at Liepāja port – 90.4 thousand passengers, which is 11.3 % more. Ferry traffic at Riga Passenger Terminal is closed since 2021.

The number of passengers having arrived at and departed from the Riga International Airport in 2023 comprised 6.6 million, which is 23.2 % more than in 2022, but 15 % less than in 2019.

Another dataset by CSB shows that in 2023, compared to 2022, freight transport by all modes of transport has reduced.

96.1 million tonnes of freights were carried by land and pipeline transport, a decrease of 6.3 % compared to a year ago.

In 2023 rail transport freights comprised 15.4 million tonnes, which is 27.5 % less than in 2022. National freights by rail comprised 1.7 million tonnes – 3.6 % less.

Freights by road comprised 80.7 million tonnes, which is 0.3 % less than in the previous year. Transportation of national freights comprised 65.8 million tonnes, 1.5 % more than a year ago. 

In 2023 cargo loaded and unloaded at ports comprised 38.7 million tonnes, which is 19.6 % less than in 2022. Freight turnover at Riga port was 18.8 million tonnes, 20.1 % less, at Ventspils port – 10.4 million tonnes or 29.3 % less, at Liepāja port – 7.2 million tonnes or 4.9 % less, but at minor ports – 2.2 million tonnes or 0.3 % more.

Riga International Airport loaded and unloaded 19.2 thousand tonnes of freights or 9.2 % less than in 2022.
