Passenger and sea freight transport trends went up in 2022

Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) data published on March 3 show that in 2022, compared to 2021, passenger traffic by all modes of transport has risen.

In 2022, 162.4 million passengers were carried by land passenger transport, which is 28 % more than in 2021 and 6.9 % more than in 2020, but 32.1 % less than in 2019.

The number of passengers carried by rail transport comprised 15.7 million passengers, which is 40.2 % more than a year ago and 22 % more than in 2020, but 15.7 % less than in 2019 before the pandemic. The number of passengers carried by national transport rose by 40.1 %, but the number of passengers carried by international transport – three times.

The number of passengers carried by regular bus traffic lines comprised 91.8 million passengers, which is 26.2 % more than in 2021 and 5.9 % more than in 2020, but 34.4 % less than in 2019. The number of passengers carried on national lines increased by 26.1 %, but the number of passengers carried on international lines – three times.

In 2022, 371.1 thousand passengers arrived at and departed from Latvian ports, which is 48.8 % more than in 2021, but 20.4 % less than in 2020 and 65.4 % less than in 2019. At Riga Passenger Terminal ferry traffic was still closed, at Ventspils port passenger turnover comprised 289.9 thousand passengers, which is 41.5 % more, but at Liepāja port – 81.2 thousand passengers, 1.8 times more than a year ago.

In 2022, 5.4 million passengers arrived at and departed from the Riga International Airport, which is 2.3 times more than in 2021 and 2.7 times more than in 2020, but 31 % less than in 2019.

Freight

Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) data show that in 2022, compared to 2021 freight transport by sea transport has increased, but by land and pipeline transport – reduced. 102.6 million tonnes of freights were carried by land and pipeline transport, which is 1.3 % less than a year ago and 1.3 % more than in 2020, but 13.1 % less than in 2019.

Rail transport freights comprised 21.3 million tonnes, which is 2.1 % less than in 2021, 11.4 % less than in 2020 and 48.6 % less than in 2019.

80.9 million tonnes of freights were carried by road transport, which is 0.8 % less than in the previous year, but 6.9 % more than in 2020 and 9.8 % more than in 2019. 

In 2022 the cargo loaded and unloaded at ports comprised 48.1 million tonnes, which is 15.2 % more than in the previous year and 7 % more than in 2020, but 22.9 % less than in 2019.
