Sarkandaugava overpass open for traffic

Take note – story published 1 year ago

After nearly 3 years of work, on Thursday, April 6, traffic was opened on the new Sarkandaugava overpass connecting Viestura Avenue to Tvaika Street, Latvian Radio reported.

Along with the opening of the overpass, major traffic changes are taking place on the intersection of Tvaika, Duntes, and Tilta Street.

Director of the Transport Department of Riga City Council Jānis Vaivods said: “This way, we reduce the number of conflict points and ensure that this intense traffic flow in the direction from Tvaika Street can turn safely onto the Ganību dam.”

Road signs have already been changed at the intersection, but the arrangements are supervised by the police.

The Austrumu Highway is also scheduled to be completed this year. The overpass and the future highway will be connected and are intended to significantly improve traffic flow in the city center, in particular, relieving it from truck traffic.

Construction of the Sarkandaugava overpass started on March 30, 2020, and was completed on December 15 last year after multiple extensions of the deadline.

The length of the new overpass is 454.4 meters without the ramps. It consists of seven separate structures in both directions and two connections.

The works were carried out by the “Personu Apvienība OTC”.
