At 16:36 on Saturday, officers of the State Police received information about a BMW 730 driver in Tukums municipality who had driven off the road and crashed into a tree.
As a result of the impact, the car broke into two. A man born in 1977, an unidentified man, and an unidentified woman died in the accident, the police said.
A man born in 1993 was also injured in the collision and was taken to hospital.
Experts concluded the impact had been huge and the permitted speed had been greatly exceeded.
“In most cases, the car would have stayed with that tree, but seeing that there was another collision and another tree hit, it's certainly not 90 kilometers per hour,” Oskars Irbītis, traffic safety expert at the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD), said.
The second reason is the technical condition of the car itself.
"The fact that it fell apart shows that quality is not good. And tragic accidents often involve cars around 20 years old. If new and fresh, active and passive safety systems would already work,” Irbītis added.
Police continue the identification of the dead.
Adding those killed in this crash, 55 people have already lost their lives on the roads this year.
As reported by LSM, a particular surge of fatal crashes has been observed in recent weeks, leading to an emergency safety check on the Liepāja Highway in the west of Latvia.
