Latvia plans 17 more average speed control sections

Continuing the implementation of the average speed control system, it is planned to equip 17 more sections with average speed cameras, the “Latvian State roads” (LVC) said on December 11.

€300,000 has been allocated for the design of the sections and installation of equipment.

The LVC explained that the choice of stages was determined by statistics on the number of road accidents of all types in the last three years. During design, the installation sites of the equipment will be further specified.

The next 17 planned stages on the state's roads will be located on highways A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A9, A12, and P80.

Average speed control in Latvia is introduced to improve traffic safety. According to statistics, the most common type of serious road accident is collision, and the reasons for collisions are incorrect driver decisions at the wheel, reckless maneuvers, the consequences of which are exacerbated by high speed. Experience from other countries shows that the number of collisions decreasesin stages where average speed control is introduced.

Currently, 16 average speed control sections are in operation on the national road network.

Initial statistics show that in August and September this year, compared to the corresponding period in 2022, in the speed control sections, the number of road accidents decreased by 46%, the number of accidents with victims by 64% and the number of accidents with injuries by 73%.
