Riga Airport handled 420,000 passengers in January

Riga Airport handled 420 thousand passengers this January, which is five thousand more than a year earlier.

According to preliminary data on the airport's performance, almost 338 thousand passengers used Riga Airport (airport code RIX) for direct flights, while the number of transit passengers remained stable at 82,000 in January. Therefore around 20% of passengers were transit passengers.

The average occupancy of passenger flights in January exceeded the 70 percent mark, with flights to the United Kingdom and southern Europe remaining the most popular.

More than half of the passengers served in January, or 222,600, travelled with the national airline airBaltic. As usual, the second largest carrier was Irish low-cost airline Ryanair with 132,000 travellers.

Since the beginning of the year, a separate line is available at Riga Airport security check for passengers traveling with children up to the age of seven.
