In the first month of the year, the volume of liquid cargo decreased by 0.6 million tonnes, and bulk cargo – by 0.02 million tonnes, while the volume of general cargo decreased by 6000 tonnes. The drop in liquid cargoes was influenced by the turnover of petroleum products, the decrease in the volume of bulk cargoes was determined by the decrease in the volume of coal cargoes, while the decrease in the volume of bulk cargoes – ro-ro cargoes and timber cargoes.
However, there is also an increase in the turnover of certain cargo types in ports. The volume of grain cargoes has increased by 0.3 million tonnes, and turnover of wood-chip cargoes has increased by 0.1 million tonnes, but the number of containers handled has increased by 0.07 million tonnes.
In January 2024, small ports of Latvia increased their turnover by 28.9%. The increase was ensured by the increase in cargo turnover in the ports of Skulte and Mērsrags.
Compiling statistics on the volume of rail freight, the data show that in January 2024 the total turnover of freight was 1.1 million tonnes, which is 20.8% less than last year during this period.
