Red light jumping to be monitored by AI in Liepāja

On Tuesday, March 21, the first AI transport monitoring system on a crossing will be unveiled in Latvia at the intersection of Ūliha and Robežu Street, which identifies whether red lights are being observed, Latvian Radio reported.

Failure to follow traffic light signals, maneuvering, and changing to other lanes at an intersection cause many road accidents.

Given that police resources are limited, video cameras with artificial intelligence support are to be installed at critical locations, said Juris Binde, Chairman of the LMT Board.

Such transport monitoring systems are also planned to be installed at other intersections in Latvia.

The system is unique in that it is connected to both the Road Traffic Safety Directorate database and the national or city municipal police database. The penalty for an administrative violation is applied automatically, which makes it possible to ensure better monitoring of movement.

Liepaja is the first city where such a system is installed.
