Vice Mayor: A third of Rīga's streets are in critical condition

A third of Riga's streets with asphalt cover are in bad or even critical condition, Rīga Vice Mayor Vilnis Ķirsis (New Unity) told Latvian Radio on March 21.

He said that all streets in the capital had been scanned and artificial intelligence had analyzed their condition, concluding that the situation was not pleasing.

Ķirsis said that asphalt cover has a lifetime of approximately 10 years, but the city has streets that have not been repaired for 15, 20 and even 30 years.

The City Council now plans to gradually address this problem and aims to repair 10% of Riga streets each year, which would need around 45 million a year, Ķirsis said. This year it is expected to spend 20-22 million euros for this purpose.

According to him, with gradually increasing funding for street sorting, the city could restore all critical streets within five years.
