Expect jams on Latvian roads ahead of holidays

When planning Midsummer trips, drivers should take into account traffic restrictions on road repair sections, and traffic in the Rīga vicinity will likely be heavy starting from the middle of the day on Friday, said Latvian State Roads (LVC).

LVC said that the number of temporary traffic lights has been reduced in some construction sections during the holidays, but most of them will remain and longer travel times will have to be expected. LVC urged people to obey the rules of the road during the construction works and not to drive through red traffic lights.

Major traffic restrictions on main national roads:

Jelgava highway (A8) from Jaunolaine to Rīga, speed limit 70 and 50 km/h, estimated crossing time 40 minutes;
Jelgava highway (A8) from Dalbe to the bridge over the Vircava River, speed limit 70 and 50 km/h, up to three traffic lights, estimated crossing time up to one hour;
Vidzeme highway (A2) from the turn to Cēsis (P20) to Rīdzene, up to seven traffic lights and a local detour, speed limits 70 and 50 km/h. Estimated crossing time 45 minutes;
along the Rucava highway (A11) from Liepāja to Bernāti, with road narrowing in some places and the introduction of two temporary traffic lights. The entire section takes 20 minutes to cross.

Consult the Latvian State Roads website for a map of traffic restrictions.
