Latvian Post gets new cars

Latvian Postal service (Latvijas Pasts, LP) has purchased 340 new cars for its employees so that they can deliver mail and provide services more effectively, including at customers' residences, Latvian Television reported March 22.

Latvian Post's fleet has been supplemented with more environmentally friendly cars – they have a lower fuel consumption, thereby reducing pollution caused by transport in the environment.

According to the Latvian Post's communication to the media, the new car will ensure up to 25% less fuel consumption, and according to estimates the Latvian Post, will manage to reduce CO2 emissions by 75.75 tonnes per year or 28.58%.

The cars will be handed over to specific post office employees, not to departments.

Vehicles are mostly received by post deliverers in areas where the provision of postal services is ensured at customers' places of residence, several kilometers apart from each other.

“In fact, the post is the most sustainable way of delivery, because a very large proportion of post office workers are still on foot. Not only in Latvia, but it is also in the whole world. But to make life easier for these employees, we still have a project for electric bicycles,” said Mārcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the Board of JSC Latvijas pasts.
