Authority detects fake language documents by taxi drivers

The Road Transport Directorate (ATD) has detected 79 forgeries of documents proving knowledge of the Latvian language of taxi drivers from October 2021 to May 2024. The ATD has reported these findings to the State Police, ATD said May 22.

Latvian legislation provides that commercial passenger transport by car or taxi can only be carried out by a person registered in the Register of Taxi Drivers, the ATD reminded.

The register of taxi drivers includes a driver who holds a valid category B driving license with at least three years experience driving vehicles of this category and a record of fewer than 8 offenses.

In addition, the driver must not have a driving disqualification and must speak the Latvian language at the B1 level at least.

Persons submitting forged documents to ATD will not be registered in the register of taxi drivers.

Ukrainian civilians are exempted from the requirement to prove their knowledge of the national language.
