Students might get lower bus fares in Rīga

Rīga local government has submitted a draft regulation for public consultation, in which it is planned to reduce the public transport prices for students at universities of Rīga, Latvian Radio reported November 27.

Currently, fare relief for students of higher education institutions on the public transport route network is 50% of the regular monthly ticket price, or EUR 15. It is now planned to set a discount of 60% and reduce the monthly ticket price to EUR 12.

The price of the monthly ticket has been revised taking into account a collective submission by students. The public consultation will take place until December 7, the opinion on the changes can be expressed on the website of Rīga City Council.

Amendments to the binding regulations also provide for extended 100% fare relief for Ukrainian residents registered at Riga Support Center until June 30, 2024.

Samanta from Rīga Stradiņš University told Latvian Radio: “If one trip was EUR 1.20, the monthly ticket is also more advantageous because those trips add up. [..] For example, as medical students, lectures take place all over Rīga, and this traveling is very necessary, so the monthly ticket is good for us, but for example, for those who do not get lectures so often in person and do not get to travel so often, the monthly ticket is also not good.”

Alina from Rīga Stradiņš University: “I agree in principle. I also travel very far from Rīga, but [buying] a monthly ticket of EUR 15, if we don't have a lecture every week in a month, every day, then it is a waste of money. But buying a 90-minute ride to go to one class and then another ticket to go back, which is three euros in total, doesn't work for me either [..].”

Kristaps from the Latvian Academy of Culture: “I personally do very well with that monthly ticket. It is very convenient to use transport every day, but it would probably be better to make a single ticket cheaper.”
