Over 100 truck drivers fined for breaking new city center rule

After the introduction of the new traffic rules in Rīga, which prohibit the traffic of freight vehicles through the city center, a punishment has already been imposed on 111 violators, of which approximately two-thirds were foreign carriers, Riga local government reported Monday.

After the opening of the Eastern highway in the city, for nearly two weeks, transit traffic of freight vehicles has been banned through the city center. In the first few days Riga Municipal Police (RPP) warned violators, but administrative violation proceedings have started since last week.

Last week, freight vehicle transit traffic was monitored continuously by the RPP, but it is not going to be as intensive anymore.

Failure to comply with the rules is subject to a fine of €30 for the driver.
