Drivers will have free public transport in Rīga Thursday

In relation to meteorologists' forecasts of the snowfall expected Wednesday night, Rīga municipality will have “blizzard tickets” on Thursday, November 30. Drivers will be able to use the city's public transport for free on this day.

A passenger vehicle registration certificate, or car technical passport, will be considered a valid document for public transport rides on Thursday. This document must be presented to ticket controller upon request.

“Blizzard tickets” may be used by any person of adult age with a car technical passport. The driver's license does not need to be shown. The car's technical passport confirms that the vehicle in question is not in traffic at that time, which is the aim of the “blizzard tickets”.

“Clearly, at that moment when the streets are full of cars, the machinery can't work, can't clean, it's all congested. That's why any driver using public transport benefits from a more operational cleaning of the city. That's why we're announcing these “blizzard tickets.” We will also encourage those driving cars to work remotely as much as possible tomorrow,” said Riga Mayor Vilnis Ķirsis (“New Unity”).

No additional trips are planned yet, but they will be added if necessary, Ķirsis said.
