“We unveil a ew – fifth route linking the neighborhood of Ķīmija to the Stropu neighborhood. It was meant to happen since the 1980s, now it's finally happened. Stops are ready, route ready, contact networks ready. It's the longest route here, 15 kilometers,” said Gunārs Groza, technical inspector of Daugavpils traffic.
On January 25 this year, another step was taken to expand the Daugavpils tram network, which is a significant event for passengers, Dagnija Briška-Nikolayeva, project manager of Daugavpils traffic, said. Total costs of works were EUR 11 million, co-financing of the Cohesion Fund – 85%.
In fact, some of these funds were previously unused by Rīga public transport in the so-called “Skanste tram” project which was never implemented. In order not to lose European funding, then – about four years ago – the Ministry of Transport directed it to the regions. Daugavpils tram users now enjoy the benefits.
Along with the construction of the new line, the 3rd tram route has been extended in Daugavpils. Tram traffic in the city is being improved, a reconstruction is currently underway on the 2nd and 4th tram line section.
