The fifty-millionth passenger of the Latvian national airline airBaltic was awaited with a ceremony at Rīga International Airport on Monday, August 29, Latvian Television reported on August 31.

The lucky passenger, Dace, who was returning from vacation in Austria, was awaited with flowers, musicians' performances, and ovation. Dace told LTV it had seemed like a joke at first.

“The feelings are very moving. This is a huge event, and they have come together for me, well, for airBaltic, but I am involved in this event. Super. I had great pleasure with this,” said Dace.

According to Martins Gauss, the airline's executive director, this is a big step for a relatively small airline.

Gauss said: “50 million passengers over 27 years mean that we have transported nearly every Latvian resident 25 times over the years. This means not only celebration but also shows the confidence of over 50 million passengers with us."

Laila Odiņa, Chair of the Board of Riga International Airport, said that this is an important stepping-stone point for the development of the airport.

Both the airline and the airport indicated that, when analyzing global growth rates, 100,000,000 passengers will certainly be expected faster than after another 27 years.
