Artistic vandals use trains for canvas in Latvia

Take note – story published 1 year ago

Recently, vandals have increasingly often used passenger train cars for their artistic expression, said Passenger Rail (PV) on May 17. This is inconvenient for passengers as some cars are taken out of circulation until they are cleaned.

Over the past two weeks, the PV recorded two cases of doodling and spray-painting on the cars, on May 15 in Rīga and May 10 in Aizkraukle. Seven such cases of vandalism have already been recorded this year, 12 last year. Each is reported to the State Police in order to initiate criminal proceedings.

"Painting the trains is a deliberate cause of damage to property. It is not only the Passenger Rail that suffers but also a number of passengers whose journeys cannot be serviced. There are replacement compositions that sometimes have fewer cars than originally," said Sigita Zviedre, a company representative.

Depending on the size of the damage, cleaning can take up to several days.

If people notice such acts of vandalism, they should be recorded in photos or video and reported to the State Police by calling the number 110.
