In the first four months of 2022, over 100 safety breaches have been registered in connection with electric scooters. 40% of 106 occasions were related to transporting another person on a scooter. Just as many were related to being under the influence of substances.
"Gross offenses are on the rise. Many occasions were identified where passengers were transported while [the driver] was drunk, under the red light," said State Police representative Juris Jančevskis.
A representative of the Latvian Mobility Association Edgars Jēkabsons pointed to the lack of responsibility for exceeding the speed limit of 25 kilometers per hour. Speed cameras and enhanced monitoring are being discussed.
The campaign "Don't be a monkey. Ride like a person" will be active for a month. Another promotional video about scooter use is below.
