Foreign and Latvian pensioners to have same discount on public transport

Take note – story published 3 years ago

In future, foreign pensioners will receive fare discounts in Riga public transport under the same conditions as Latvian pensioners, according to a decision taken by the Riga City Council's temporary administration on Wednesday, July 15.

Following repeated recommendations of the Ombudsman, the temporary administration of the Riga Municipality on Wednesday supported amendments to the binding rules of the City Council, specifying the categories of passengers who are entitled to fare discount in the city's public transport.

In future foreign pensioners who have declared their place of residence in the administrative territory of Riga will only be able to receive fare discount when they reach the age specified in Latvia, which gives the right to claim an old-age pension, and will have acquired the status of a pensioner.

Persons born after October 1956 will be allowed to receive the previous discount for a period of not more than 180 days from this amendment entering into force.
