Harsher punishments for road safety breaches to be discussed

Take note – story published 2 years ago

The Road Safety Board of Transport Ministry will discuss the existing sanctions for serious administrative offenses in road traffic in an online think-tank, Latvian Radio reported November 29.

It has been previously argued that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs should not be subject to administrative short-term arrest but to the seizure of a vehicle. Such practices apply, for example, in Belgium, Denmark, Italy and France. However, only about a third of vehicles driven are owned by the driver, so their seizure would not always be proportionate as it would have consequences for the owner of the car.

Monday's think-tank will also discuss harsher penalties for repeated gross infringements of traffic rules. The discussions will be streamed live on the Facebook page of the Ministry of Transport starting 13:00.
