Latvia plans to ban travel to and from three countries

To mitigate the risks of Covid-19 spread, government plans to ban trips to and from three countries, and to limit any unimportant trips abroad, the government said February 2.

Transport Minister Tālis Linkaits (New Conservative Party) said on Twitter that the government has reached an agreement on the need to temporarily ban travel to and from Great Britain, Ireland and Portugal.

At the same time, security on land borders will be strengthened, Linkaits said.

The government will decide on specific ways of tightening monitoring measures on internal borders on Thursday. It is also not yet known how long the ban will remain.

Internal border control will be enhanced so that the new strain of coronavirus "has a hard time getting into Latvia", said Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš.
