During the last months of the year, the volume of mail is traditionally increasing throughout the world, but this year the influence of COVID-19 is also important. The limits imposed have a negative impact on both transportation opportunities and potential delivery times, said LP.
It is recommended that consignments should be sent to other continents by the end of November in order to reach the destination by the end of December. Mailings within Europe should also be sent no later than early December.
In Latvia, the last delivery date for shipments before Christmas is December 23, and before the new year - December 30.
When planning the desired time for delivery of consignments, the distance to the destination country should be taken into account, if the destination is further, the consignment may be delayed for a longer period of time. This is particularly the case where there is no direct air traffic between countries at all and shipments are travelling in transit between different countries.
If the postal operator of the sending country does not have the possibility to use direct air traffic for the delivery of the consignments, they shall be directed between other countries, including by means of road freight, and the consignment may stay in transit for several weeks.
Moreover, international passenger transport has been cancelled or restricted between many countries, so there is still a limited and delayed exchange of mail with some foreign countries. This is due to the fact that the majority of international mail is delivered by passenger aircraft, where the volume of mail currently to be loaded is insufficient, and therefore all other types of delivery routes are being sought.
