Mock disaster on railway: residents asked not to panic

Take note – story published 3 years ago

On Thursday, July 23, the Latvian Railway (LDz) company will organize large-scale training activities at the Šķirotava train station, imitating an ecological disaster, said spokeswoman Ella Pētermane July 21.

During the training, derailment of a cargo tank will be simulated, leading to dangerous substance leak and a fire. Operational services will have to localize and extinguish the fire, contain the leak, pump the tank content into an undamaged tank and place the train back on the rails.

In order to verify the readiness of the members involved in the Civil Protection System for coordinated action and to strengthen cooperation in disaster management, not only employees of LDz will participate, but also the State Fire and Rescue Service, the National Guard, State Police, Riga Municipal Police, as well as the State Environmental Service.

Training at the Šķirotava station will start at 10.

LDz called on residents not to worry, because there will be no risk to the environment or to the population - besides, operational services will be there anyway.
