Not many arrivals from third countries, says Rīga Airport

Since Wednesday, following permission of flights from and to third countries, there have been three such flights, Rīga International Airport spokeswoman Laura Kulakova told Latvian Radio March 21.

Kulakova said that the possibility of flying Covid-19 positive passengers to Latvia from third countries is relatively small.

A total of 92 passengers arrived on three flights, of which 40 persons were required to perform the Covid-19 test. Other passengers responded to a variety of exceptional statuses, namely sailors, diplomats, athletes. In the near future, the number of flights from third countries subject to stricter rules will be even smaller, as the government decided that this requirement no longer applies to travelers from the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The next week, six flights to Riga are expected from Kiev and Minsk. airBaltic started flights to Kiev last week, while Belavia will start flights to Minsk this week, Kulakova told Latvijas Radio.

“This was demonstrated by the first days that flights were very empty and it is not likely that a huge number of passengers on these flights is expected,” Kulakova said. “It should be noted that there are still various restrictions in place both in Latvia and around the world, which makes travel difficult.”

Arrivals from third countries must carry out a Covid-19 test at the closest possible location (it may be done at Rīga International Airport). If this is not done, the person must immediately go into self-isolation at a tourist accommodation site from the list on Latvian Investment and Development Agency website. The person must stay there until a test is carried out.

Arrivals who test positive for Covid-19 on arrival will be subject to a ten-day self-isolation in a tourism accommodation location available on LIAA website. Both the test and hotel stay will be paid for by the traveler.

Arrivals who test negative on arrival will still be subject to 10-day self-isolation but may do so at their place of residence.
