Rail Baltica to bring major changes to Rīga central bus station

In a month's time, significant changes are expected to take place at the Riga International bus station, related to the construction of “Rail Baltica”, Latvian Radio reported November 7.

In early December, approximately a third of the Riga bus station site will become the construction site of Rail Baltica. The work will be organized gradually and there will be changes.

"The shelters will be demolished first, and a fence will be installed that will separate the terminal area from the construction site. In any case, there will be problems for people in the next two years, drivers will also have to follow the information. We have talked to the builder that we will coordinate with each other if things change significantly. It may be possible that some of the arriving buses will not even be able to enter the terminal but let people out on Maskavas street because bus movements will be difficult, [with a] smaller territory," said Vaira Gromule, Chair of the Riga International Bus station Board.

It will take about 20 months to complete all the work. In order to facilitate the orientation of passengers during the changes, the terminal intends to place the information on both the electronic board and the printing on tickets and billboards. The rebuilding time will be difficult, but the terminal area will be upgraded and connected to Old Riga.

The bus station staff are concerned about a red oak planted in 1964.

“I really don't think the big Rail Baltica project should start with the felling of oak. This oak is special for us precisely because it is, first of all, red oak or stone oak – strong and in difficult circumstances, has been growing there since the station went into service and the terminal started operating, from 1964,” said.

The local government has expressed its commitment to save the tree by transferring it to the embankment of the Daugava or storing it in a container until it has a place, but the public consultation on felling is still ongoing. The exact date of major changes to the terminal has not yet been specifically identified, but jobs will start in the near future, such as the demolition of auxiliary buildings on the terminal site.
