Rail freight transport decreased by 46.2% in Latvia

In the first five months of 2020, the volume of rail freight transport in Latvia decreased by 46.2% compared to the corresponding period of 2019 and was 10,022 million tonnes, according to data compiled by the Ministry of Transport.

In particular, international transport amounted to 9,473 million tonnes, a drop of 47,7% compared to 2019, while domestic transport increased by 8.6% to 549 000 tonnes.

The information shows that, from international rail freight transport, transit cargo amounted to 7.885 million tonnes, a decrease of 52.8% compared to the first five months of 2019, import cargo amounted to 1.432 million tonnes, an increase of 11.9%, an increase in export cargo of 156 000 tonnes, an increase of 37.1%..

At the same time, the volume of rail transit goods through ports during the first five months of 2020 was 6,747 million tonnes, which is 54.1% less than a year earlier, while land transit through the territory of Latvia was 1.138 million tonnes, a decrease of 43.6%.

In 2019, in Latvia the volume of rail freight transport decreased by 15.8% compared to 2018 and was 41,492 million tonnes. In the first five months of last year, the volume of rail freight transport amounted to 18,611 million tonnes.
