The board of the Rīgas satiksme municipal company has sent letters to the Škoda Electric, Škoda Transportation as well as Solaris Bus & Coach companies, asking them to pay €6.5 million in penalties over delayed deliveries of trams, trolleys and buses, the company said January 21.

Rīgas satiksme said that Rīga has not received 13 out of 20 low-deck trams, 45 out of 100 trolleys and 140 buses on time. These are part of tenders scrutinized by the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau in a case which has so far resulted in the arrest of several officials including former Rīgas satiksme head Leons Bemhens.

Rīgas satiksme asks the companies to pay penalty fees in different timescales depending on the prior agreement, but all requests fall within the next 30 days.

The company also said it doesn't exclude going to court in case of non-payment.

As reported, the Corruption Prevention Bureau (KNAB) has launched a criminal probe over alleged corruption at Rīgas satiksme concerning procurement contracts worth hundreds of millions of euros.

Six people have been detained in Latvia and two more in Poland over the case, which also resulted in the resignation of Rīga vice mayor Andris Ameriks (Honor to Serve Rīga).
