Rīgas Satiksme to send ten more buses to Ukraine

The municipal public transport company Rīgas Satiksme intends to donate ten more buses to Ukrainian cities, Latvian Radio reported November 29.

Džineta Innusa, head of Rīgas Satiksme, told the Defense, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Commission of the Saeima that a request has been made by Ukraine for second-hand but still usable buses.

In order to take such a step, it is intended to change the framework for the possibilities for municipalities to donate to Ukraine.

"Both Rīga City Council and Rīgas Satiksme have repeatedly received requests from several cities in Ukraine to donate unnecessary buses, and we indeed have those. 11 buses were already donated in March and we have at least 10 more Mercedes Benz buses at our disposal. They are in good technical condition, but we will not use them because their engines do not meet the requirements of Euro 2 and Euro 3 set by the EU. We would be very happy not to write these buses off and scrap them, but to donate to Ukraine,” Innusa said.

The buses are scheduled to be handed over to representatives of Ukrainian cities early next year. They will be delivered to the Ukrainian border, where they will be taken over by local authorities.
