Sarkandaugava overpass hopefully to be open in March

The tens-of-millions-worth overpass in Sarkandaugava across railway line Rīga-Skulte has been completed, but traffic is still not allowed. The Rīga City Council has named yet another deadline when cars will be able to drive on it, hoping to open the traffic in March, Latvian Rdio reported January 6.

Riga Vice Mayor Vilnis Ķirsis (New Unity) confirmed to Latvian Radio that the Sarkandaugava overpass has been completed.

Nearly a half-kilometer-long and nearly €46 million worth bridge over the railway line, connecting Viestura prospekts to Tvaika Street, was originally scheduled to be unveiled at the end of May last year, but difficulties were caused, for example, by the location of communications networks that needed to be rescheduled, so the work was expected to be completed by the end of the summer. But the plans were altered by the war in Ukraine, which caused big problems with the availability of building materials. So the traffic was scheduled to be launched in November for the national holiday, but also that failed. Shortly before the opening, residents pointed to problems at one of the passageways on the side of the Viestura prospekts.

The head of the Transport and Transport Affairs Committee of the Riga City Council, Olafs Pulks, said that the transmission is now safe for traffic: “The process is in the Rīga construction board. Commissioning is ongoing, and we that if everything goes smoothly, the facility could be put into service in March."

A few more shortcomings have been identified, which will be rectified once the weather conditions allow, said Pulks, stressing that they are unlikely to affect the opening of the bridge.

It is still planned to build a transmission to Kundziņsala and a connection to it in Sarkandaugava. Thus, in combination with the future East Highway, the city center will be relieved from trucks heading to the port.
