On Sunday December 6, the temperature dropped sharply, resulting in salt becoming ineffective and traffic causing snow to melt, stick to the road, and forming ice tracks. At low temperatures, it is not possible to clean or melt ice risks from the road, said Latvian State Roads.
Currently, the road network manager monitors the situation and is starting to sprinkle the icy roads with a mixture of sand and salt, but reminded people to drive especially carefully and to inform them of ice tracks by phone 80005555.
Over the weekend, the weather forecast indicates an increase in temperature and the ice will melt, LVC said.
