Media regulator bans three more Russian sites in Latvia

The National Electronic Mass Media Council (NEPLP) has decided to deny access to three websites maintained in Russia – wagner2022.ru, dentv.ru and yapolitic.ru. These websites disseminate propaganda, and it is in the public interest to block such information, according to NEPLP's statement on July 27.

It has been found that the websites keep up a narrative that Western countries and NATO are to blame for the situation in Ukraine, that information on events around the world is distorted, that Russian aggression is warranted. Even recruitment into Wagner is taking place.

NEPLP Vice-President Aurēlija Ieva Druviete stated: "When taking such decisions, we are, of course, primarily valuing freedom of expression as a fundamental value in every democratic society. But for us, the law provides for exceptions in which [cases] have the right to limit the content, and this is the case, taking into account the evidence obtained by at least two institutions. "

The NEPLP has determined that the decision taken should be enforced immediately, but it is possible to appeal within a month.

Challenging and appealing the decision will not stop it from being enforced.
