The event will take place on October 29 from 9:00 to 16:30 in a hybrid format and will be available for online participation. The language of the event is English, but translation into Russian will be available. The detailed program of the event is attached.
“Local and ultralocal media play an important role in the media ecosystem, but they have suffered a lot in recent years due to rapid digital change and shifts in business models. Therefore, we want to share both inspiring success stories of local media and discuss how to strengthen their local oversight functions and provide them with systematic and long-term support,” said Gunta Sloga, Executive Director of the Baltic Center for media excellence.
“The Baltic countries remember very well that to a large extent it was thanks to local media that we gained confidence and stood up for our independence. Likewise, it is imperative today that local voices are heard and empowered, to make us all more confident and secure amid the occurring flows of fake news and disinformation. During the four years of “Supporting Independent Media in the Baltics Action (SIMBA)” Internews in cooperation with Baltic Centre for Media Excellence (BCME) has put every effort to strengthen independent media outlets of the region, encouraging them to create reliable, high quality media content, to increase their audiences and to secure financial sustainability. The good examples of Internews-supported media outlets – Media Trendsetters Group – have proven to be role models for others, whose successes are still to come. I wish the participants of the conference a most fruitful exchange of experiences and insights which would benefit the common good” - said Jolanta Tarasevičienė, Project Director of Internews, an international non-profit organization founded in 1982 and supporting the media.
