More Russian TV channels canned in Latvia

Take note – story published 2 years ago

A brace of Russian television channels were relieved of the burden of broadcasting in Latvia February 28.

The National Electronic Mass Media Council (NEPLP) has banned the retransmission of Russian television channels "MIR 24" and "RTVI" in the territory of Latvia, the chairman of the NEPLP Ivars Āboliņš told Latvian Television.

The ban on the channel "MIR 24" in the territory of Latvia will be valid for an eye-watering 5 years, while "RTVI" gets off with just one year in the sin bin.

As with the previously terminated channels, the decision was made in connection with the threat to national security and will take effect immediately, Āboliņš pointed out.

"In the next few hours, until midnight, these channels must disappear from the Latvian information space. Like the eight other channels we [NEPLP] closed in the previous days, they will not return to the Latvian information space for a suitably long time," Āboliņš said.
