TV Rain has paid 10,000 euro fine

Take note – story published 1 year ago

The Russian independent television channel "TV Rain" ("Дождь"/"Dozhdj") has paid the fine of 10,000 euros imposed by the National Electronic Media Council (NEPLP), NEPLP chairman Ivars Āboliņš confirmed to the LETA newswire January 5.

The NEPLP imposed the punishment for marking occupied Crimea on a map as part of Russia and calling the Russian army "our army" in a broadcast.

Meanwhile TV Rain has appealed a separate 4,000 euro penalty applied by NEPLP for not providing a language track in Latvian.

As previously reported by LSM, late last year, the NEPLP sparked international controversy by deciding to cancel the broadcasting license of TV Rain, which had relocated to Latvia after finding its operation in Moscow coming under increasing pressure from the authorities.

The broadcast ban came into effect on the night of December 8.
