Anete shows you the way into 'ie-' words

Take note – story published 3 years ago

Our favourite YouTuber, Anete Germane, has been busy in the production suite again to bring you another glimpse into the linguistic richness and strangeness of the Latvian language.

This time around she focuses on the very common "ie" prefix denoting ways in, getting in, climbing in and about a million other things. After a brief warning about false 'ie' words the tour departs, and a very colorful one it is.

In the hands of most YouTubers this would make for a philological snoozefest but with Anete even the minutiae of linguistic prefixes become funny and surprisingly educational.

"You can either ieslēgt (switch on) a lamp or ieslēgt (lock up) someone in your basement," Anete explains.

At the very least you will emerge from this brief tutorial with an amusing and polite new way of telling Latvian friends you stepped in horse**** plus myriad drinking terms. The potential usefulness of both these things when arriving at parties, weddings or funerals should not be underestimated.
