Būris: How to deal with Europe's demographic deficit?

Take note – story published 2 years ago

Europe, the "old continent" is getting even older, with low birth rates and longer life expectancy. The number of people of working age is declining and the number of Europeans who will have to be supported by an old-age pension system is increasing.

This is a major challenge recognized by all European Union countries. Is it possible to increase the birth rate, or will the only solutions be to increase the retirement age further and reduce pensions? Can migrant labor plug the employment gap?

In the latest of the 'Būris' discussions from Brussels with LTV correspondent Ilze Nagla, Geran MEP Dennis Radtke (Group of the European People's Party) gives his views on the EU's demographc conundrum.

The Brussels discussions in English are bolstered by local Latvian-language debates on related issues. You can see the list of topics that will be covered at the dedicated Būris web page on LSM. These include animal welfare, multiculturalism, euthanasia, and other controversial themes.

The Būris project is co-financed by the European Union.
