It is always a lively and stimulating affair and this year's agenda looks particularly strong with participants including Edward Lucas, Keir Giles, Nika Aleksejeva, Anne-Marie Brady and Tim Hwang, among many others after opening comments from President Raimonds Vējonis and Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš.
In his remarks Kariņš compared the internet and the challenges its poses to the phenomenon of people whizzing through the streets of Rīga on electric scooters without crash helmets, which is the latest hipster craze.
"While avoiding censorship, we have to consider clever, European-wide legislation to bring the social media platforms under the umbrella of responsibility of what sorts of information they are disseminating. We have to introduce it in order to defend democracy, our values and way of life. New technologies require new thinking,” said Kariņš.
