Latvia's Artūrs Kučs elected to European Court of Human Rights

On April 16, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe elected Artūrs Kučs as Judge to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in respect of Latvia, according to a release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The term of office of the current judge to EHCR, Mārtiņš Mits, expires on September 2.

The candidates for the post were Artūrs Kučs, Jānis Neimanis and Daiga Rezevska. On March 5, the list of candidates was submitted to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Artūrs Kučs currently serves as a judge at the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Latvia and is one of the ad hoc judges of the Court in respect of Latvia.

Under Article 23 of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, a judge to the Court is elected for a term of office of nine years, and re-election is not possible.
