On May 24 2023, the Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, Margus Tsakhna, who was in Rīga on a working visit.

The Foreign Ministers discussed bilateral relations, cooperation in international organisations, the priorities of the Latvian Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, as well as the security situation in the region and support to Ukraine.

In a press conference, the pair stressed the united front they present on a range of issues including their "identical view" on the need for Russia's leaders to face international justice for their crimes in Ukraine.

"Sometimes by some countries we have been called 'hysterical' politicians from the Baltic states about the Russian issue and Putin," said Tsakhna, "but unfortunately we have been right and now, I think that now our message is stronger and it is more seriously taken."

With regard to Ukraine's NATO aspirations, Tsakhna said it was important that "a clear message was given to the Ukrainians to become members in the forseeable future".

He also praised the recent announcement of a joint Latvia-Estonia procurement of defensive missile systems.

"It's a great sign for our allies that we do real things together," he said.
